ブッカー国際賞
イギリスの5月21日に発表となったブッカー国際賞、今年受賞したのはJokha AlharthiによるCelestial Bodiesだった。
翻訳者はマリリン・ブース（Marilyn Booth）。
舞台はオマーンのある村で、主人公は三姉妹のMayya、Asma、Khawla。Mayyaは停滞失恋を経験したのちにAbdallahという男性と結婚する。Asmaは義務感から結婚を決める。Khawlaはカナダへ移住した恋人を待ち続け、舞い込む結婚の申し込みを拒否している。
奴隷制を敷いていたオマーンが現代に向けて少しずつ変わっていく姿を、三姉妹と家族の人生とともに描いた小説*1。

Jokha Alharthiはオマーン出身の作家で、作品が英語に翻訳されたのはオマーン人女性作家で初めてらしい。Sultan Qaboos大学の助教授で、若手ながらも短編小説や児童文学など著書が10冊あり、英語以外にもセルビア語、韓国語、イタリア語など様々な言語に翻訳されている。
The Guardianの記事によると、下記がChair of judgesの言葉。
"Through the different tentacles of people’s lives and loves and losses we come to learn about this society – all its degrees, from the very poorest of the slave families working there to those making money through the advent of a new wealth in Oman and Muscat. It starts in a room and ends in a world.
We felt we were getting access to ideas and thoughts and experiences you aren’t normally given in English. It avoids every stereotype you might expect in its analysis of gender and race and social distinction and slavery. There are surprises throughout. We fell in love with it.”
この物語が「ある部屋から始まって、世界で終わる」というのはとても印象的ですね。

ちなみに日本人作家が最後にブッカー国際賞にノミネートされたのは2016年（大江健三郎の『水死（Death by Water）』、翻訳者はDeborah Boliver Boehm）。
去年受賞したのは、オルガ・トカルチュクの『国際派』でした。

そして米ロチェスター大学のThree Percentにより設立されたBest Translated Book Awardも、5月15日にショートリストを発表していた。

こちら、ロングリストには残雪のLove in the New Milleniumなどブッカー国際賞と重なる作品もあったのだけれど、ショートリストは全く異なるセレクション。どちらかといえばこちらの方が大衆的というか、一般的な翻訳文学読者の好みに合わせた感じかも。
ロングリストには横山秀夫作・Louise Heal Kawai訳の『クライマーズ・ハイ（Seventeen）』、ショートリストには村田沙耶香作・Ginny Tapley Takemori訳の『コンビニ人間（Convenience Store Woman）』が入っている。
